Altum Angelfish

Altum angelfish originally came from Brazil, Venezuela and Colombia. The word Altum is a Latin word means tall and this fits the fish well because it can grow as 30cm/12’’ in height and they can get long as 15 cm/6’’. Altum angelfish are the sensitive version of angels. They are not that suitable for keeping as pets because of its timid and sensitive tratots plus they could cost a lot ranging from $20-$50. But if you really into this angel, then you must prepare to pay for this amount to acquire this sensitive angel. Being rare could even add up to its amount.

Altum angelfish’s tank should be 120cm/4ft long and should not be shallower than 75cm/30’’. You should put some bogwood on its aquarium and the water should be soft and acidic as the water in the Amazon basin. This is what altum angelfish is accustomed of and by not providing them with this can shorten their life span. The suitable and normal range of ph for its water is 4.5-6.5 plus they prefer warmer water with temperature of 28-30C/82-86F. This is the perfect water temperature and type you should provide your sensitive angelfish. Being rare can also means very sensitive which requires extra amount of care and attention.

Altum angelfish is one of the largest and colorful cichlid in the reef. They are known for its timid traits that even a small shadow could frighten them. Though they are timid and a bit frightened, when they start to get accustomed to its surroundings, they can be good pet fish. But Altum angelfish is not that friendly to smaller fishes in the reefs though they may join the school of other fishes, they still get aggressive and very territorial as they grow older and when they in the breeding stage. It is better to familiarize yourself on which are the types of fishes you should put in together with your altum angels to prevent any injuries or even death of other fishes in your tank.

Its distinctive description of silver body with greenish tint, four dark broad vertical bars and some faint color bars, altum angelfish is larger than any angels both in height and length with steeper forehead. Its body is compressed with diamond shape and poited snout with long and flowing fins and extended dorsal. Mature altum can even have some streamers on the outside corners. It also has a very long and delicate pelvic fins, and it can reaches for about 9 inches in length. They love to swim around and will eat all kinds of live and even flake foods. Feed them some frozen foods and you will see how eager they are with these types of altum angelfish foods.
